Gutter Services
Gutter systems that guide water away from your foundation and protect your home year-round.
Your gutters do more work than most homeowners realize — directing thousands of gallons of water away from your foundation, siding, and landscaping every year. When they're clogged, sagging, or undersized, that water ends up exactly where you don't want it.
AMG Roofing and Contracting installs seamless gutter systems sized correctly for your roof, along with gutter guards to cut down on maintenance. We also repair and replace damaged sections, re-pitch sagging runs, and make sure downspouts are directing water well away from your foundation. One of our customers had a gutter replaced within two days of reaching out, with no mess left behind — that's the standard we hold ourselves to on every job.
Gutters, in plain terms
Gutters exist to take water that lands on a large roof and put it somewhere harmless. A roof sheds a surprising volume in a heavy storm, and if that water is allowed to run off the edge it lands against the foundation, splashes back onto siding, and erodes whatever is planted below. Most wet-basement complaints begin above ground.
Nearly all residential gutter now is seamless aluminium, formed to length on site so the only joints are at corners and outlets. The common profile is K-style, the squared-off shape that looks like crown moulding from the ground; half-round is the rounded profile usually seen on older and period homes. Five-inch is standard, six-inch moves considerably more water and pairs with larger downspouts.
What a good gutter system does
- It protects the expensive parts of the house
- Foundation, grading, siding and soffit all last longer when roof water is carried away from them. Gutters are cheap relative to everything they protect.
- Sizing and downspouts do the real work
- A large or steep roof section can overwhelm a five-inch gutter in a downpour regardless of how clean it is. Getting the size and the number of downspouts right matters more than any accessory.
- Seamless means fewer places to fail
- Joints are where gutters leak. Forming the run on site removes most of them.
Where to be realistic
- Guards reduce maintenance, they do not end it
- Under mature hardwoods — which is most of the older neighbourhoods here — guards keep the bulk of the leaf load out, but fine grit, seeds and shingle granules still accumulate. Treat them as fewer cleanings, not none.
- Ice dams are an attic problem
- Ice building at the eaves is caused by heat escaping into the attic, melting snow that refreezes at the cold edge. Gutters collect the evidence and take the damage, but no gutter or guard fixes the cause — insulation and ventilation do.
- Gutters can only hang on sound wood
- If the fascia behind them has gone soft from years of overflow, that has to be dealt with first. It is a common finding on a gutter replacement and worth knowing it may come up.
Gutters are the cheapest part of the exterior and they protect the most expensive ones, which makes getting them right unusually good value. Sizing, downspout count and where the water actually goes afterwards decide whether they work — a downspout discharging straight against the foundation has moved the problem a few feet, not solved it. We look at all three, not just the gutter.
